It's been a while since my last update. I'm currently preparing for my next solo show at Galeria Cosmo, Barcelona, Feb 10 - March 11. I'll have a few new pieces as well as some old works and prints on exhibit :}

Observance Group Show/The East Side Culture Crawl/Print on the Nose Exhibition

Last week was an intense week with 2 openings. My apologies to those I haven't had a chance to write back to. Here's what I've been working on:

Observance- A group show at Kafka's with 2 talented ladies, Sibel Duzenli and Ola Volo curated by Michael Schwartz. The art will be up till next year!

The following 3 days after the opening of Observance was the East Side Culture Crawl. My studio space which I share with artists/good friends Kyu Hwang and Angelica Jang was open to public, along with 300+ artists in the building. This was my first time participating in the culture crawl after moving into Parker studios 3 months ago. We had an amazing weekend meeting local art lovers and speaking about our work. Last month, I had 2 weeks to work on 7 commission pieces for Lululemon 's new store on Madison Ave in New York. The artwork were based on a provided narrative, featuring the store, the community and the surrounding neighbourhood. They're for the wall behind the cash wrap, approximately 14 ft in length - definitely the biggest sizes I've worked on for print!

This exhibition aims to simulate the distinctive styles, shapes, and mediums of an antique collection of letterpress type, in the form of contemporary art. The Letter Collector is curated with the intention to exhibit both emerging and established artists in one massive group show based on the common love of type and script. This is a silly painting that I did for El Kartel's 100 Amigos show with original art work from 100 participating artists. Each was given a 12 x 12" canvas to work with. It has been YEARS since I last painted something and it was really fun to pick up the paint brush again. It almost felt like putting icing on a cake.

This new hippie-inspired drawing will be published in the next issue of Atypica Magazine based in Argentina. I drew this directly on the paper without doing any sketches beforehand. It turned out way better than the previous drawing which I put almost too much thoughts in and ended up looking too literall. Last week was the opening of Rad Modus, a group show at i.daburn salon that features works from Tiffany Munoz, Kelly Haigh, Caroline Weaver, Lydia Fu and myself. Here's an illustration I did for the latest issue of San Francisco-based Meatpaper Magazine, an independent publication that collects all sorts of stories about the meat culture. The article is about eating insects and my interpretation of it is a worm taco that branches out into a otherworldly forest. It was so much fun working with such an uncommon topic which I can some what relate to...since I've tried fried worms couple years ago in Thailand.

Recently I set up a store on Copenhagen based agency, ArtRebels.com. The products I'm selling are pretty much the same as what I'm selling on Big Cartel, but as I get more prints I'll continue to to add more on Art Rebels. I'm also selling 2 new prints in the stores - Fairy Tale and X

Can't believe that its mid June already! I've been chilling too much this month, laying on the beach and taking walks around the city. Summer in Vancouver has always been nice despite the occasional showers, but I'm also looking forward to San Franciso next week.

I've been occupied with work lately and have a lot of deadlines coming up this and next month, but travel plans are made - Sasquatch Music Festival at the end of this month and San Francisco at the end of next month! Did this poster for Hot Dog Day at 221a (my studio). Come join us for hot dogs if you're in the area. There will be a hot dog stand in the gallery selling dogs and beers.

This is a new illustration I did for Nylon Magazine's May 2010 Issue. The article, written by Paul Caine, is about the competitive film industry and the different ways for independent filmmakers to get their films out there. Having a background in film and animation, I feel really lucky to be able to work on this fun topic without any restrictions on the concept. The gorilla girl at the bottom is supposed to be me by the way!

I was honored to be invited to participate in Revista Gooo #9 - a collaborative magazine based in Argentina that showcase the works of illustrators and designers around the globe. It has also featured many artists that I like such as Gary Baseman and Nate Williams. The theme for this issue is Utopia. My idea is about giving souls to inanimate objects...therefore its a chair party! The Magazine will be out in June and my friend Lydia is also in it. Can't wait to see what others have done!

Lately I've been practicing to draw with watercolor. I found it a bit difficult to control as I always end up adding too much water, but I like the variety of subtle effects that watercolor gives. My friend Morii sent me a few found photographs from the 70s so I decided to draw something based on one of the photos - a hand holding a spoon. This is an inspiring image because the white board doesn't cover the background entirely, showing that the person was actually hiding behind it.

The Storialist - I Know You Do

I always wonder how people relate to my personal work. One of my drawings, I Know You Do, was linked by The Storialist as an inspiration for her poem. The Storialist is Hannah Stephenson, a poet, writer, and instructor from Vancouver and now based in Los Angeles. Her poems, which I find equally inspiring, are inspired by found images of art, photography, architecture and sculptures. Here's the poem she wrote:

I know you do sit in the warm car

and hesitate before applying key to ignition,

the still, hot air a just-filled bath.

I know you do harmonize with the dial tone

when you place the receiver against your ear.

I know you do feel unsettled

when you brush a long strand of dark hair

from the stiff wool of your coat.

A super quick drawing from an unused idea for an article..thought it would be fun to draw it anyway.
I bought a watercolor pack some time ago and didn't like the quality of it because it seems a little water resistant and hard for blending. But it gives an interesting texture that's somewhat porcelain-like? I also used the same paper for the Fucking Amal drawing.

I did a full-page and a spot illustration for Montecristo magazine - a local lifestyle magazine that features local design, fashion, music etc. The article is about dealing with mental illnesses. The Magazine is out now in Chapters and Indigo. I'll post up a picture of it on print later.

I illustrated for a free new publication called Develop Magazine on an article about Midtown Vancouver written by Vanessa Richmond, with art direction by Cause + Affect Design Studio. The magazine is out now and I'm pretty satisfied with how the illustration looks on print.

LUMI tealight holder

LUMI tealight holder is a collaboration with my friend Mira Yung. It's made of flexible and thin aircraft plywood that can be easily assembled. It also casts beautiful shadows when its lit up. Her original design was called Ash and Bubble and recently she asked me to design a new edition called Raincity.

*Mira Yung is an talented industrial designer who focuses on ecological, product, interior, and exhibition design. Her porcelain speakers is definitely one of my favorites!

I was invited by Paul Paper to participate in his project Postcards to Alphaville. He gave out a list of films and asked each artist to choose one film to watch and do a portrait of a specific character. My choice was a Swedish film called Fucking Amal directed by Lukas Moodysson- about Two teenage girls falling in love in a small town. Can't wait to see contributions from other artists!

I just finished an editorial illustration for ION Magazine last week on an article about a band called The Pointed Sticks from Vancouver. The band was popular in the 70s and was recently reunited.

Fairy Tale Project

I was invited Gabrielius Mackevičius to participate in an ongoing fairytale project where each illustrator decides what's going to happen next. Here is my passage, continued from the previous illustration by Genevieve Simms (her work is amazing!):

While the two men panicked, they turned around and saw a mysterious lady with bright red lips and the voice of a cricket. She whispered into their ears,
"The crocodile's master is an Egyptian Plover who lives 5 kilometres down the stream. He used to be fed on bits of decaying meat in between the crocodile's teeth, but ever since he decided to become a vegetarian, the crocodile has been trying to bribe him to clean its teeth by bringing him exquisite treasures. If you bring him a rare and delicate fruit, he might return the coin to you in exchange." The lady leaped and vanished in the tall grass without a trace.

Emerging Cultural Space

Last month I worked on an editorial illustration for Cause + Effect Design Studio for their new publication. The article is about midtown Vancouver as an emerging cultural space. The writer compared the city's different neighbourhoods to a tray of desserts. Here are my visual interpretations for the article.

Since September I've moved into my new studio space at 221a Artist Run Center. Its been great working around a bunch of talented artist and designers. Recently, my studio-mate Sarah and I decided to come up with a bi-monthly theme to work on individually. Here's a self portrait I did as a response for the first theme : pattern. I'll explore a little more with this theme in the coming week.

Below is a small illustration to be used as part of the cover for the next issue of Ricepaper Magazine.

REVOLVE at Vancouver Asian Film Festival

My animated short, Revolve, was screened at Vancouver Asian Film Festival last week. It was shown on the opening night with a feature length film, Children of Invention directed by Tze Chun. It was exciting and scary at the same time to see my film on the big screen and speak about it in public. The 4-day festival was an awesome experience!

To Eat or Not to Eat

An illustration for NUVO magazine for an article about Vegetarianism, dolphin hunting, and the dilemmas of eating meat. I was surprised that I went for a bright and saturated color combination I've never tried before. Also I found the perfect background texture from google - a pink rug that somewhat looks like ground meat.

I just finished my first editorial gig for a local literacy magazine called Briarpatch. Its a full-page illustration for an article on freelance writers in Canada. The deadline was pretty tight so I had to make some minor compromises. I really enjoyed the process as it reminded me a little bit of painting, which I haven't done in a long time. Looking forward to see it on print!
